Options
Galvanized — the standard silver finish. Lowest cost, longest track record.
Vinyl-coated — black, green, or brown coating over galvanized core. Visually recedes into landscaping far better than bare metal, and the coating adds corrosion protection. Black is the most popular residential choice by a wide margin.
Privacy slats — inserted vertically through the mesh to create partial screening. An economical middle ground between open chain link and a solid fence.
Mesh gauge and height — heavier gauge for commercial and security applications, standard residential gauge for pet and boundary use.
Two Local Rules That Matter
No barbed wire. Alhambra prohibits barbed wire, razor wire, ultra-barrier, and electrified fencing in residential zones unless required by law or a public agency. Industrial districts may qualify for an exception through a separate approval process — don't assume it's automatic.
Check the front yard. Alhambra caps front yard fencing at three feet, and front yard fences require Design Review Board approval, which chain link is unlikely to receive in a residential streetscape. Note also that neighboring Monterey Park prohibits chain link in front yards outright — if you own property across city lines, the rules don't travel with you.
